Can You Prevent Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are unsightly and unhealthy. Approximately half of the adult population in the United States will develop them, so it is important to be aware of what they are, how they are caused, and what (if anything) can be done to prevent them.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are overly dilated blood vessels that have gotten into this condition through years of pressure caused by lack of exercise, prolonged standing, or sitting in an improper position (such as crossing the legs for extended periods of time).

While, for most people, varicose veins are a mere unsightly nuisance, they can become quite painful, and can restrict movement. In some very extreme cases, neglect of varicose veins can lead to dangerous skin ulcers.

Is There Any Way To Prevent Varicose Veins From Forming?

At present, there is no medically proven method of preventing varicose veins from forming. However, there are several measures a person can take in order to minimize the chances of varicose veins appearing.

It is an excellent idea to develop and maintain a program of regular exercise and movement. For example, persons who are employed in a position which requires them to sit at a desk for many hours during the day might be well advised to walk to a nearby restaurant during their lunch break or, if this is not feasible, to perhaps take a brisk walk around the parking lot area.

It’s Important To Maintain Proper Blood Circulation

The important thing is to keep circulation moving in the legs, since this is the area that varicose veins will most likely first appear. For example, if a person is used to wearing clothing that fits tightly around their waist, groin, thighs, and legs, it is an excellent idea to discontinue this. These are all areas which can be adversely affected by a loss of proper blood circulation.

Seek Professional Advice In Order To Control The Problem

If, despite all the precautionary measures you have taken, varicose veins should appear, there is no reason to despair. It’s an excellent idea to seek professional assistance from a qualified authority the very moment that the appearance of varicose veins is first noticed.

While there is no “cure” for varicose veins, there is much that can be done to prevent the condition from getting dangerously out of hand. The Center For Venous Disease is available to call upon in this capacity.
